Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels 9/2/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

Last Updated: 09/01/2022 at 10:40 PM ET

The Los Angeles Angels (57-74) host the Houston Astros (84-47) at Angel Stadium on Sept. 2 for the first game of the final series of the season between the two clubs. Houston leads the season series 9-4. The Astros have the best record in the American League and lead the West by 11 games.

Reid Detmers gets the start for the Angels. The lefthander is 5-4 with a 3.47 earned run average over 103.2 innings pitched. Detmers has faced the Astros twice this season but did not factor in the decision in either. In his last start against Houston on July 14, Detmers allowed just two runs in six innings as the Angels lost 3-2 in 10 innings.

Lance McCullers Jr. (1-1) is the Astros’ starting pitcher for this game. He has pitched just 16 innings this season, giving up 13 hits and 10 walks while striking out 13 in three starts. McCullers threw five scoreless innings against Baltimore in his last outing but did not earn a decision as the Astros lost 2-0.

Houston leads the American League with 190 runs scored since the All-Star break, while Los Angeles is last with just 137. Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve have hit .338 and .303, respectively over that stretch. During that time, Bregman’s 1.040 OPS leads the team.

Detmers has been very good in August, going 2-1 in four starts with a 2.91 ERA over 21.2 IP, but the Angels’ offense has been putrid. Los Angeles is hitting just .224 with a .665 OPS for the month and strikes out more than any team in Major League Baseball. Look for McCullers to get a lot of swings and misses and for the Astros to hit the Angels bullpen hard. Final Score Prediction: Houston Astros win 6-2.
