Tigers vs Phillies Picks and Prediction – 6/5/2023

An interleague matchup will take place on Monday night, when the Detroit Tigers visit Citizens Bank Park to take on the Philadelphia Phillies. The Tigers (26-31) have dropped 18 of their first 30 road games and trail AL Central Division leading Minnesota by 3.5 games. On Sunday, Detroit was limited to six hits and struck out 12 times during a 6-2 road loss against Chicago.

Twenty-five year old lefty Joey Wentz (1-5, 7.28 ERA) has not had much success at the major league level. The Tigers have lost two of Wentz’s last three starts and he has surrendered 12 runs across his last ten plus frames. 

The Philadelphia Phillies have won consecutive games and are 7.5 games off the pace in the NL East Division race. On Sunday, All-Star OF Kyle Schwarber homered twice and drove in six runs to power Philadelphia to an 11-3 road triumph against Washington. 3B Drew Ellis also went deep twice and scored four runs for the Phillies (27-32).

The Phillies will give the nod to twenty-nine year old righty Aaron Nola (4-4, 4.70 ERA) in the series opener. Philadelphia has dropped three of Nola’s previous four starts and he has given up 15 runs over his last 26 innings of work.
