Cubs at Phillies 8/13/19 - MLB Picks & Predictions

Last Updated: 08/20/2019 at 10:42 AM ET

In Tuesday night MLB action, the Chicago Cubs will invade Citizens Bank Park to open up a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Chicago is ten games above .500 overall and leads St. Louis by two full games for the top spot in the NL Central Division. On Sunday, Kris Bryant’s three-run blast in the seventh inning put the Cubs ahead for good during a 6-3 road victory against the Reds.

Thirty year old left-hander Jose Quintana (10-7 4.23 ERA) will take the mound for the Cubs in this matchup. Chicago has won each of Quintana’s last seven starts and he has allowed just 17 earned runs total over that stretch. The Philadelphia Phillies have lost seven of their last ten games and appear to be a team that is fading out of playoff contention. On Sunday night, Philadelphia allowed San Francisco to score three runs during the bottom of the eighth inning of a 9-6 road loss. J.T. Realmuto reached base four times and scored three runs for the Phillies, who are four games above .500 overall.

Veteran left-hander Jason Vargas (6-6 4.09 ERA) will make his third start as a member of the Phillies. Vargas, who was traded from New York, has posted a solid 1.26 WHIP through 105 plus innings of work.

Philadelphia OF Jay Bruce is currently on the 10-day injured list with a left flexor strain. Through 118 games, Chicago ranks 7th in OPS and 12th in runs scored. For the season, Philadelphia ranks 22nd in OPS and 18th in runs scored. Take the Cubs to win the series opener behind another strong outing from Quintana. Final Score Prediction, Chicago Cubs 6-4.
