The top two teams in the NL Central Division will clash on Wednesday afternoon, when the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers wrap up their series from Miller Park. The Cubs took Monday’s opener in extra innings, but were limited to just two hits during last night’s 4-0 loss. SP Tyler Chatwood allowed four runs over five frames for Chicago in defeat.
Chicago skipper Joe Maddon will turn to twenty-eight year old southpaw Mike Montgomery (2-1 3.56 ERA) in this matchup. Through 43 innings of work, Montgomery has allowed just three home runs and owns a 1.16 WHIP.
The Milwaukee Brewers have won 40 of their first 67 games this season and are doing it with a bullpen that ranks second in the majors with a 2.70 ERA. On Tuesday, SP Chase Anderson struck out six batters over seven frames to even his record at 5-5 on the year. Travis Shaw drove in all four runs for the Brewers, who lead the Cubs by a half-game for first place.
Thirty year old right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (5-1 3.58 ERA) will head to the hill for the Brewers on Wednesday. Milwaukee has won each of Chacin’s last four starts and he has given up nine runs over his last 23 plus frames.
