Colorado Rockies at St. Louis Cardinals 8/17/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Colorado Rockies will continue their series at Busch Stadium when they take on the St. Louis Cardinals. The Rockies have been one of the worst teams in the league away from home, going 18-36 on the year in away games. The Rockies dropped two of their last three to the Diamondbacks and dropped to 51-66 on the year, last in the NL West and 30.5 games back. St. Louis has won seven of their last ten games and taken the lead in the NL Central after winning two of three against the Brewers.

St. Louis has been one of the better offenses in the league averaging 4.70 runs per game ranking fifth in the league in scoring offense. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been one of the best players in baseball this season, he has hit 28 home runs (T-6th in MLB), driven in 89 runs (4th in MLB), and hitting .328 on the year (2nd in MLB). Goldschmidt is currently the favorite to win NL MVP listed at (-140).

The left-handed Jordan Montgomery will get the start for the Yankees in hopes of continuing his solid year. Montgomery is 5-3 with a 3.37 ERA and 1.07 WHIP and is coming off back-to-back excellent starts. In his last two starts, Montgomery has pitched 11 straight scoreless innings, allowing just six hits, and struck out nine.

The Rockies have been a great offense, and a solid team, at home. The same can not be said when they go on the road. Colorado is scoring 3.24 runs per game away from home which is second to last in the league. First baseman CJ Cron has anchored the lineup and is on the way to the best season of his career, leading the team with 23 home runs and 80 RBIs.

The right-handed German Marquez will get the start for the Rockies and hopefully can build off a solid start against the Cardinals just a week ago. Marquez allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out six, and the Rockies went on to beat the Cardinals 8-6. Marquez has had an up-and-down season going 6-9 with a 5.08 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, one of the worst seasons since being called up in late 2016.

Even with the big spread, the Cardinals are the play here. Colorado is the worst team in the league on the road, the offense goes dead, the pitching staff struggles and the Rockies don’t win games. St. Louis has too many weapons, Jordan Montgomery has put together back-to-back great starts, and the Cardinals have won seven of their last ten games. St. Louis keeps it rolling so lay the juice with the favorite. Final score prediction, Cardinals win 5-3.
