Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres 8/1/21 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Colorado Rockies travel on the road to Petco Park to take on the San Diego Padres - two teams that are on varying different paths. The Padres are contenders and although they were beaten out at the deadline by their divisional foes but still have a solid chance at making the playoffs, currently at 60-46 and 5.5 games back in the NL West. Colorado wasn’t able to sell at the deadline but is in the start of their rebuild at 45-59, 20 games out, and holding one of the worst road records in the league at 12-39 on the season.

Colorado is a solid offensive team that is hitting .243 which ranks 11th in team batting average and is 18th in scoring offense averaging 4.31 runs per game. Unfortunately, those numbers are worse away from Coors Field as they’re scoring just 3.06 runs per game on the road, the lowest in the league. Second baseman Ryan McMahon has been a solid bat in the middle of the lineup; he’s hitting .264 with a team-high 17 homeruns and 55 RBIs.

The left-hander Austin Gomber will get the start for the Rockies, he’s had a very solid start to his career and is coming off back-to-back solid outings. Gomber has gone six innings in his last two starts, allowing a combined five runs on eight hits while striking out ten and walking three in his last two combined starts.

San Diego has a chance to make a push at the postseason and has the offensive firepower to do so hitting .245 as a team, ranking eighth, and scoring 4.76 runs per game ranking 10th in scoring offense. Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. continues to be one of the best young players in the MLB, he’s leading the team with 31 homeruns and hitting .292, and is second on the team with 70 RBIs.

Chris Paddack will get the ball for the Padres, and he’ll need to turn around what has been a poor season thus far, it’s only his third year in the majors but he has a career of 5.13 ERA in 93 innings of work this season. Paddack has a solid outing ten days ago allowing just five innings on three hits in a 3-2 win in 7 innings; he followed that up with another win over the Athletics where he allowed three runs in six innings.

Paddack has had a down year in comparison but he’s started to settle down and has picked up the decision win in his last three starts. The Padres have a solid offensive unit that is able to get to Gomber, and the Rockies’ offense continues to falter on the road as the Padres close out the series at home with a win. The Padres at PetcoPark are 35-21, while the Rockies have been the worst team away from home in the MLB this season and both those trends play out. Final score prediction, Padres win 5-4.
