Chicago White Sox at Oakland Athletics 9/9/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Oakland Athletics host the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 9 for the second game of a four-game series. The White Sox won two of three at home against the A’s to close out July.

Chicago was 69-68 entering play Thursday after winning six of the last eight games. The White Sox have won their last three series 2-1, besting Kansas City and Minnesota at home before heading to Seattle.

Lucas Giolito, who is 10-9 with a 5.21 ERA, gets the start for the White Sox, while James Kaprielian (3-9, 4.79 ERA) will get the ball for the A’s. Giolito has surrendered 150 hits, 50 walks and 23 home runs in 133 innings while striking out 147. Kaprielian has allowed 103 hits, 52 walks and 16 homers over 109 innings with 76 strikeouts.

Giolito has been much better on the road, going 6-2 with a 3.91 ERA, while Kaprielian has been hit hard at home, 0-5 with a 5.87 ERA.

Jose Abreu leads the White Sox in batting average (.309), on-base percentage (.382), runs (75) and runs batted in (65). Abreu has also hit 14 home runs, one behind team leader Andrew Vaughn’s 15.

Sean Murphy leads Oakland in almost every offensive category. The A’s catcher/designated hitter Is tops on the team with a .252 average, .339 on-base percentage, .442 slugging percentage, 114 hits, 30 doubles, 58 runs, 62 runs batted in and 46 walks. His 18 home runs trail only Seth Brown’s 21.

Given Kaprielian’s struggles at home, Giolito’s success on the road and the White Sox winning run of late, it’s clear why Chicago is favored to win this one. The White Sox are 11th in the league with 118 runs scored over the last 30 days, while the A’s are 24th with 94. Look for Abreu and Eloy Jimenez to lead Chicago to victory. Final Score Prediction: Chicago White Sox win 5-2.
