Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals 9/2/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The St. Louis Cardinals (76-55) host the Chicago Cubs (55-75) at Busch Stadium on Sept. 2 to kick off the final three-game series of 2022 between the National League Central rivals. St. Louis leads the season series 10-6.

Adrian Sampson is starting for the Cubs for the 12th time this season. He is 1-4 with a 3.97 earned run average over 65.2 innings pitched. Sampson’s last time facing the Cardinals was Aug. 23; it did not go well as he allowed five runs in 3.1 innings.

On the mound for the Cardinals is Jordan Montgomery (7-3, 3.28 ERA, 145.1 IP). Montgomery is 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA in five starts for St. Louis since arriving via trade. He was near perfect against the Cubs on Aug. 22 at Wrigley Field, tossing a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The Cardinals are steaming toward the playoffs after going 22-7 in August. The Cubs finished 15-15 in August but are just playing out the season at 20 games behind the first-place Cardinals and 14 in back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.

Montgomery dominated the Cubs last week, and there is little reason to expect a much different outcome this time around. Sampson may not be around long for Chicago. Over the last 30 days, the Cardinals’ offense has led the league in hits (271), walks (106), runs (167), home runs (48), batting average (.279) on-base percentage (.360) and slugging percentage (.498). Final Score Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals win 7-2.
