The Chicago Cubs will be looking to continue their streak against the Pittsburgh Pirates when they travel on the road to PNC Park. Chicago squared off with the Pirates on opening week, losing the opener but answering with back-to-back wins; in the first game of this series, the Cubs beat the Pirates 4-2 to improve to 4-3 on the year. Since the opening day win the Pirates have dropped six straight games, being swept by the Reds in between the home-and-home with the Cubs.

The Cubs bats have yet to get the memo that the season has started and they continue to struggle from last season batting just .157 on the year. Kris Bryant has returned to better form early this season, he’s batting .250 on the year and is tied for the lead in homeruns with 2 and second on the team in RBIs with 3. Javy Baez is leading the Cubs in RBIs with 5 but his continued struggles with strikeouts (11 in the first 7 games) have held his batting average to .200 on the year.

Zach Davies will get the ball in his second start of the season, he was solid in his first start of the year pitching 5 and ⅔, striking out 5 and allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. Davies has bounced around in the last two years, after starting off his career in Milwaukee. He’s has a lifetime ERA of 3.79 but isn’t a punchout guy striking out 502 guys in 689 career innings.

Pittsburgh just doesn’t have a ton of star-power in their lineup and is 24th in the MLB in batting average batting .202 on the year. FanGraphs predicted them to not only finish last in the NL Central but with the worst in the national league. Collin Moran has been a solid starter for the last four seasons in Pittsburgh and got off to a good start batting .280 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBIs. As has Phillip Evans who is leading the Pirates in batting average at .368 with 2 homeruns and 3 RBIs.

The right-handed Mitch Keller will take the mound for the Pirates and he was gashed by the Cubs in his first start giving up 3 runs in 3 innings and walking 4 runs. Keller was excellent in his five starts last saeson but just hasn’t been able to get through a lot of innings, he made 5 starts pitching 21.2 innings and posting a 2.91 ERA last year.

Chicago’s bats have really struggled in the early season but the Pirates are simply put one of the worst teams in baseball this year. Keller has struggled to get deep into games across his entire career and was beaten up by the Cubs in his first start of the year. Chicago is able to get to Keller again and the bats start to wake up for Chicago.

Free MLB Pick:

Chicago Cubs -155

The Pirates losing streak continues at home behind a solid start from Zach Davies and with the Cubs bats starting to wake up, they continue their dominance over the Pirates in the early season. Pittsburgh is one of the worst teams in the National League and the Cubs, although their early-season struggles, have too much star power to not find a groove at the plate eventually and this game could be a great chance to do so. Final score prediction, Chicago Cubs win 5-3.
