Cardinals at Brewers - Game 2 - 9/16/20 - MLB Picks & Predictions

Two middle of the pack National League Central teams meet up in the back end of a doubleheader when the St. Louis Cardinals meet up with the Milwaukee Brewers. In what will end up being a five-game series, these two teams split the opening two games with the Cardinals winning the second to crawl back to 21-21 on the season. Milwaukee fell to 21-25 on the season and have lost three of their last four games.

The Brewers are one of the worst offenses in the MLB this season coming in batting just .220 as a team to rank 28th in the MLB and are averaging just 4 runs per game. Christian Yelich, who won the 2018 MVP and was exceptional last season hasn’t gotten anything going this season, batting just .195 with 9 homeruns and 19 RBIs. Yelich has struck out 62 times this season, the 4th most in the MLB. Without Lorenzo Cain in the outfield, who opted out due to coronavirus concerns, the Brewers lean heavily on Yelich to produce and he hasn’t been doing so this season.

St. Louis ranks 22nd in the MLB in scoring offense averaging 4.4 runs per game and is batting .245 as a team, the 17th best clip in the MLB this year. The Cardinals have struggled with the long ball this year hitting 41 homeruns as a team this year ranking 29th in the MLB, leading the way for St. Louis is Paul Goldschmidt who is batting .312 with a team-high 6 homeruns.

Neither team has designated a starter for the second game of a double-header but it is worth mentioning that the Cardinals pitching staff has been one of the best in the MLB this season. Coming in with a 3.69 team ERA, St. Louis ranks 6th in team ERA and both of the opening two games of the series with Milwaukee have been low-scoring. Milwaukee comes in with a team ERA of 4.40 on the year to rank 14th in the MLB.

Both of these teams have really struggled to generate runs as of late, but in a game with a lot of question marks like who will even take the mound, I’m leaning to the team who has been better at the plate this season. St. Louis is that team and with a deeper and more talented pitching staff, they should be able to work there way through a grueling portion of their schedule including 11 games in seven days. St. Louis steals one on the road from Milwaukee and builds off of the win in the second half of the doubleheader on Monday. Final score prediction, St Louis Cardinals win 7-5.
