Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies 9/10/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

Last Updated: 09/09/2022 at 10:08 PM ET

The Colorado Rockies host the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second game of a three-game series Sept. 10. The season series between these two teams was tied 8-8 entering play Friday.

The Rockies are 59-79, last in the National League West. The Diamondbacks are 65-71 and have moved past the San Francisco Giants into third place in the NL West. Arizona is 9.5 games out of the final Wild Card playoff spot.

Jose Urena is the Colorado starting pitcher for this matchup. He is 3-6 with a 6.13 earned run average over 69 innings. Urena has allowed 61 hits walked 34 and struck out 38. In his last start against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 7, he did not factor in the decision after pitching six innings and giving up six hits and three earned runs. Arizona hit two home runs off Urena in that game at Coors Field.

Madison Bumgarner will make his 28th start for Arizona this season. He is 6-13 with a 4.83 ERA over 141.2 innings with 103 strike outs and 45 walks. Bumgarner has made two road starts against the Rockies this season and is 1-0 against them. The last time he faced them was Aug. 5 when he allowed five hits and four earned runs in 5.2 innings. The Diamondbacks went on to win the game 6-5. Bumgarner got the win at Colorado on July 9 by allowing six hits and just two earned runs in seven innings.

C.J. Cron leads the Rockies in a number of offensive categories, including runs (71), hits (135), home runs (26), runs batted in (90), total bases (245) and OPS (.799).

First baseman Christian Walker and outfielder/catcher Daulton Varsho have been the Diamondbacks top offensive players this year. Walker has 32 home runs with an OPS of .816 in 477 at bats. He has scored 72 runs and driven in 78. Varsho stat line Is 32 HR, 66 R and 64 RBI, with an OPS of .768.

The Diamondbacks are a slight favorite over the Rockies, and we think they are likely to get the win. However, the OVER 11.5 is probably the best bet for the night. Bumgarner was decent in his last start (5 IP, 2 ER vs. Milwaukee), but was roughed up in his five starts in August, giving up  27 runs in 26.1 innings. Add in Urena’s 7.36 ERA at home, and this one has all the makings of a Coors Field slugfest. Final Score Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks win 8-6.
