Coors Field Coors Field, Denver, USA
COL -115 ; O/U 12
The Arizona Diamondbacks will close out a three-game series at Coors Field to take on struggling Colorado Rockies. The Rockies have lost four straight coming in and had ample chances to beat the Diamondbacks in the season opener but inevitably fell 10-8 in 13 innings. Arizona avoided a sweep on the road of San Diego and then improved to 2-3 on the year with the win in extra-innings.
The Diamondbacks have really struggled at the plate in the early season but were able to score 10 runs in the series opener, they mustered just 12 runs in the four-game series against the Padres. It’s early but Arizona is 16th in the MLB batting .225 as a team thus far.
Second baseman Ketel Marte has been red-hot to start the season, he’s started the season going 12/23 with 4 doubles and 2 homeruns. Marte is 3rd in the MLB in batting average but looks to have improved his eye after drawing just 7 walks in 45 games last season, he’s already drawn 2 in the first five games this year. Outside of Marte, it’s been tough sledding for the Diamondbacks but the veteran third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera is 5/16 with a home run.
Merrill Kelly will get the ball for the Diamondbacks in his second start of the year, he got through 4 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. Kelly was very solid in a hyphenated 2020 season and if he can build on that, he’ll become a cornerstone of this rotation. He pitched 31 innings in 5 starts, posting a 2.59 ERA and an impressive 29K/5BB.
Colorado has got off to a rough start to the 2021 season and is 20th in team-batting average batting .214 as a team in the early season. The loss of Nolan Arenado in a trade to the Cardinals has already been a developing issue but the biggest issue has been pitching this season. Second baseman Ryan McMahon has been redhot to start the year and hit 3 homeruns in the series opener against the Diamondbacks, he’s leading the MLB in homeruns (4) and is batting .444 on the year.
The big-right hander Jon Gray will start this one-off for the Rockies, he pitched very well in a loss to the Dodgers going 5 innings, allowing 4 hits and a run but striking out 7 against a lethal lineup. Gray has been a mainstay in the Rockies rotation and has a lifelong 4.57 ERA and 3.1 K/BB ratios across his 7 years in the MLB.

Free MLB Pick:
The Rockies have got off to a rough start in the 2021 season, but I expect them to bounce back and close out the series strong. Jon Gray pitched very well in his season debut and the Rockies lineup, even without Arenado, is still very strong and capable of scoring plenty of runs. Arizona, outside of the 10 runs in the season opener, has been bad at the plate and I see that win as more of an outlier that will be difficult to recreate in this game. Final score prediction, Colorado Rockies win 6-5.
