UNLV at California 9/10/22 - College Football Picks & Predictions

Last Updated: 09/09/2022 at 11:17 AM ET

The California Golden Bears host the UNLV Rebels on Sept. 10 in the first ever game between the schools on the gridiron. Expectations aren't high for either these two but win here at least starts season in the right direction.

California opened the season against UC Davis, a Football Championship Subdivision team, winning 34-13. Former Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer threw three touchdowns in his first game for the Golden Bears. He completed 23 of 35 passes for 268 yards. Jeremiah Hunter caught six passes for 78 yards and a touchdown to lead the receiving corps. Cal’s top rusher was Jaydn Ott with 17 carries for 104 yards.

UNLV is also coming off a win against an FCS team, knocking off Idaho State 52-21. Quarterback Doug Brumfield threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns while completing 22 of 25 passes. Ricky White had eight receptions for 182 yards and two scores. Brumfield and White did not play in the second half as the win was well in hand at the break.

The Golden Bears were 5-7 last season, finishing fourth in the Pac-12’s North Division. UNLV won just two games a season ago and finished last in the Mountain West. One of the Rebels’ 10 losses came to Eastern Washington, an FCS team, in the season opener.

Plummer had a disastrous first quarter against UC Davis with no completed passes, an interception and two sacks as Cal had minus-one yard total offense to show for three drives. Cal fared much better in the second quarter as Plummer completed 14 of 16 passes and two touchdowns. Another slow start this week could end with different results. We think the nerves got to new guy and won’t be repeated in Week 2. Final Score Prediction: California wins 31-16.
