The Tulsa Golden Hurricane are set to visit Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan for a Week 1 clash against the Michigan State Spartans. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane are looking to rebound after going 3-9 during the 2018 season, but they will need to be much better on the offensive side of the ball as they finished last season ranked 103rd in points scored. The Golden Hurricane will return their starting QB from 2018 as Seth Boomer is looking to expand off his 2018 campaign where he contributed 1378 passing yards, 9 TDs, and 4 interceptions. Tulsa will return their leading rusher from last season in Shamari Brooks who pitched in 967 yards and 7 TDs. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will need to be improved on the defensive side of the ball if they want to see a major difference in their record as they finished 2018 ranked 80th in points allowed. The Golden Hurricane will return one of the best linebackers in Conference USA as Cooper Edmiston contributed a team-high 113 tackles and 4 interceptions last season. The pass rush will need to be much stronger for Tulsa this season as their sack leader from 2018 only contributed 4 sacks. The Michigan State Spartans are looking to repeat some of their success from 2018 as they went 7-6 with an appearance in the Redbox Bowl, but they will need to improve on the offensive side of the ball as they finished the year ranked 126th in points scored. The Spartans will return their starting QB in Brian Lewerke who contributed 2040 passing yards, 8 TDs, and 11 interceptions last season. Michigan State will also return their leading rusher from a season ago in Connor Heyward who pitched in 529 yards and 5 TDs. The Michigan State Spartans had one of the best defenses in college football last season as they finished the year ranked 8th in points allowed, and they will return some key talent. The Spartans return their leading tackler from a season ago as Joe Bachie contributed 102 tackles. Kenny Willekes was in the opponent’s backfield a ton during the 2018 campaign as he contributed 20.5 TFL and 8 sacks, and he is looking to expand on those numbers this year.

The Michigan State Spartans are always left out of the discussions in the Big Ten race, but they always stick towards the top and that should once again be the case this year. The Spartans were awful on the offensive side of the ball last year, but they should be improved this season as they bring back the same pieces. The major mismatch in this matchup is the Michigan State defense against the Tulsa offense as they were on two sides of the stat sheet last season. There is an ongoing controversy about who will be the starting QB for Tulsa this year and given the fact that one has not been named concerns me, especially on the road in a hostile environment. Final Score Prediction, Michigan State Spartans win and cover ATS 28-3.
