The Citadel at Coastal Carolina 9/2/21 - College Football Picks & Predictions

In Thursday night college football action, the Citadel Bulldogs will travel to Brooks Stadium to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Citadel (2-10) lost all four games against FBS competition in the fall and finished with a 2-6 record during the spring of this year in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs run a triple-option offense and averaged more than 34 minutes in time of possession a season ago.

Sophomore QB Jaylan Adams directs the Citadel offense, after leading the team with 896 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. The Bulldogs out rushed their opponents by close to 1,000 yards but managed just 593 yards through the air.

The 22nd ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were college football’s darlings in 2020 and are hoping to prove they have staying power. Coastal Carolina returns nearly everyone on an offense that racked up an average of nearly 450 yards of total offense and 38 points per game. QB Grayson McCall will look to senior WR Jaivon Heiligh, who finished two yards short of 1,000 yards receiving and found the end zone ten times.

The Chanticleers receive plenty of attention on offense, but their defense allowed just 20 points per contest last season. Linebackers Silas Kelly and Teddy Gallagher combined for 156 tackles, while CB D’Jordan Strong picked off five passes.

The Citadel was outscored 258-87 in the first half of games last year, so a Coastal Carolina first half play might be worth a look. The Bulldogs fumbled 31 times and lost 18, which would spell big problems against an explosive Chanticleer offense. Take Coastal Carolina to cruise to a convincing home victory. Final Score Prediction, Coastal Carolina win 48-7.
