Texas State at Nevada 9/3/22 - College Football Picks & Predictions

The Texas State Bobcats visit Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nevada on Saturday to play the Nevada Wolf Pack. Texas State was 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the Sun Belt Conference last season. Transfer Layne Hatcher joins Texas State from Arkansas State while two other transfers Dillon Markiewicz and Ty Evans will also battle for playing time. Leading rusher Calvin Hill is back and last season had 696 yards on the ground.

The receiving corps has plenty of talent led by Javen Banks, who last season had 553 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Marcell Barbee is also back after last season making 40 catches and catching five touchdown passes. Sione Tupou, who last season was the second-leading tackler, returns and will play alongside middle linebacker London Harris. Two starters from last year return for the defensive line. The secondary lost its top player Zion Childress to the transfer portal, but DeJordan Mask, a solid tackler, returns at cornerback. Nevada opened its regular season last Thursday with a 23-12 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday. Nevada gained only 257 yards of total offense and the Wolf Pack gave up 303 yards of total offense to the Aggies but forced five costly turnovers by New Mexico State. Nevada must play better in its season opener at home against Texas State as the Bobcats will be a much better opponent.

Shane Illingworth passed for 51 yards, while Nate Cox passed for 27 yards in the season opener. Toa Taua is the leading rusher for Nevada with 109 yards, while Devonte Lee has 61 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The leading receiver is Tyrese Mack with 40 yards. Bentlee Sanders is the leading tackler with five and Isaiah Essissima has a team-high two interceptions.

Nevada opened its regular season with a victory over New Mexico State but will face a tougher challenge at home against Texas State. The Bobcats have added transfer quarterback Layne Hatcher who will provide excellent passing and leadership for Texas State. Nevada struggled passing the ball against New Mexico State with just 78 yards through the air. Texas State has covered the number in four of the last five played on field turf.
