Arizona has had its struggles lately, and will likely be the underdog when it hosts San Diego State this weekend. Arizona opened its season with a 24-16 loss to BYU. San Diego State opened with a 28-10 win over New Mexico State. San Diego State won its first two games last year but ended 4-4. Arizona was 0-5 last year. The Wildcats lost their last six of the 2019 campaign and the current losing streak stands at 13.
In its opener, San Diego State trailed 10-0 at halftime and then erupted for 21 points in the third quarter. All four of San Diego State's touchdowns came on the ground and all of them were from 18 yards out or more. New Mexico State outgained San Diego State in total yardage, 374-363.
San Diego State gave up 360 yards passing but had three interceptions. Jordan Brookshire completed just seven passes for 115 yards. Greg Bell ran for 61 yards on 21 carries and scored from 32 yards out. San Diego State lost two fumbles.
Arizona showed it has a strong passing game, and San Diego State gave up a lot of yardage to a lesser opponent last weekend.
Arizona had more total yardage, 426-370, than BYU and had the ball three minutes longer than BYU. Arizona settled for field goals three times and had one touchdown. BYU had three touchdowns and one field goal.
For Arizona, Gunner Cruz completed 34 of 45 passes for 336 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. The Wildcats were held to 81 yards rushing. Stanley Berryhill had 12 receptions for 102 yards.
