Last Updated: 09/06/2022 at 10:00 AM ET

The Washington Huskies host the Portland State Vikings on Sept. 10 for the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Washington opened the season with a 45-20 win over Kent State. The Huskies had 525 yards of total offense led by Michael Penix Jr. with 345 yards passing. Penix Jr. completed 26 of his 39 passes with four going for touchdowns. Jalen McMillan had 87 yards receiving and two TDs. The Huskies led 31-13 at the half

Washington finished fifth in the North Division of the Pac-12 with just three wins in conference play. The Huskies were 4-8 overall.

Portland State is a Football Championship Subdivision team and a member of the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings were 5-6 overall last season and finished eight in the conference at 4-4.

The Vikings opened the 2022 campaign as 16.5-point underdogs at San Jose State and nearly pulled off the upset. Portland State led 17-14 after scoring a touchdown to open the fourth quarter but was unable to hang on for the win. Dante Chachere accounted for much of the Vikings’ offense, throwing for 270 yards and running for 83. He completed two touchdown passes but also had two interceptions. Beau Kelly had nine receptions for 133 yards and a score.

New head coach Kalen DeBoer is off to a good start with Washington, and we expect another win in Week 2. The Huskies opened 2021 losing to FCS powerhouse Montana with less than 291 total yards total offense. DeBoer’s new offense surpassed that total in the first half against Kent State. Portland State has a knack for putting a scare into FBS schools, but the Huskies will cruise in this one. Final Score Prediction: Washington wins 42-17.
