Minnesota at Illinois 11/7/20 - College Football Picks & Predictions

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are set to visit Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois for a Big Ten clash against the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Minnesota Golden Gophers come into this matchup with a 0-2 record, and they will be looking to rebound after dropping their recent road game against the Maryland Terrapins, 45-44 in OT. QB Tanner Morgan didn’t get much going through the air for the Golden Gophers as he threw for 189 yards and a TD. RB Mohamed Ibrahim was a workhorse on the ground for Minnesota as he ran for 207 yards and 4 TDs on 41 carries.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers struggled on the defensive side of the ball against the Maryland Terrapins as they allowed them to score 45 points and rack up a total of 675 yards of offense. LB Mariano Sori-Marin, DB Tyler Nubin, and DB Jordan Howden all led the way for the Minnesota defense with 8 tackles each. DL DeAngelo Carter was responsible for the lone turnover of the game as the freshman returned an interception 21 yards.

The Illinois Fighting Illini come into this matchup with a 0-2 record, and they will be looking to rebound after dropping their recent home game against the Purdue Boilermakers, 31-24. QB Coran Taylor struggled to find much consistency through the air as he threw for 273 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions. WR Brian Hightower was the top target for Taylor and the Fighting Illini as he hauled in 4 catches for 97 yards and a TD.

The Illinois Fighting Illini struggled on the defensive side of the ball against the Purdue Boilermakers as they allowed them to score 31 points and rack up a total of 456 yards of offense. LB Jake Hansen led the way for the Illinois defense with 14 tackles, 2 TFLs, and 1 forced fumble. The Fighting Illini were able to get into the Purdue backfield a handful of times as DL Owen Carney Jr. had 3.5 TFLs and 3 sacks.

Both of these programs are searching for wins in the early going as they have started the season out at 0-2, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers are the better overall team at this point. The Golden Gophers have been great on the ground to open the season as RB Mohamed Ibrahim has compiled 347 rushing yards and 6 TDs thus far, but P.J. Fleck would like to get the passing game going with his star WR Rashod Bateman. The Illinois Fighting Illini have been playing without their starting QB as he tested positive for COVID, and that has left the offense scrambling for options. Minnesota will look to control the game with Ibrahim, but don’t be surprised if Morgan and Bateman connect for the HR ball a couple of times. Final Score Prediction, Minnesota Golden Gophers win and cover ATS 38-27.
