Georgia Tech at Clemson 8/29/19 - College Football Picks & Predictions

Last Updated: 08/21/2019 at 10:28 AM ET

The Clemson Tigers will begin their National Title defense on Friday night, when they host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Death Valley. Clemson obliterated Alabama in last year’s National Championship Game by a 44-16 final score and have the makings of a team that could win their third title in four years. Sophomore QB Trevor Lawrence threw for 30 touchdowns and just four interceptions last year and has a ton of talented skill players at his disposal.

Last season, Clemson ranked third in the nation in with 527 total yards and lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 44.3 points per game. Georgia Tech has plenty of holes to fill on their front seven defensively and will struggle plenty in this contest. A new era will begin with the Georgia Tech football program, as Geoff Collins was hired to replace longtime head coach Paul Johnson. Collins, who was previously the head coach at Temple, plans in installing an NFL style, spread attack on offense. That could prove especially difficult in the early going, as Johnson used a triple-option run first offense. The Yellow Jackets have some talent in the offensive backfield, but it will be interesting to see the transition on the offensive line.

Clemson ranked fourth in the nation in total defense and limited their opponents to 13.7 points on average last season. The Tigers have plenty of holes to fill, but defensive coordinator Brent Venables will make sure this unit doesn’t drop too far off.

WR Amari Rodgers tore his ACL in the spring and that could be a factor for Clemson’s title defense, but not in week one. There is no doubt that Clemson will score at will in this game. RB Travis Etienne rushed for 8.1 yards a carry and scored 24 rushing touchdowns last year. Take the over. Final Score Prediction, Clemson Tigers win but our top play is the over 56-13.
