Boston College at Virginia Tech 10/17/20 - College Football Picks & Predictions

The Boston College Eagles travel on the road to the #23 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. Boston College is coming off of an emotional overtime win over Pitt on a missed PAT to improve to 3-1 on the year, the only loss coming at home to #12 North Carolina in a close game. Virginia Tech fell last week in a shootout to that same North Carolina team in a game where they allowed 400 rushing yards and fell 56-45 and dropped to 2-1 on the year.

Virginia Tech is a run first team and has had a ton of success this season running the ball led by senior Khalil Herbert who is averaging 10.2 yards per carry and has totaled 450 yards and 5 touchdowns through three games this year. Quarterback Braxton Burmeister is a duel threat option and is second on the team with 151 yards and 2 touchdowns, but has struggled to get anything going through the air. Burmeister has completed just 45% of his passes for 348 yards and has just one touchdown and an interception.

Boston College is averaging 25.8 points per game ranking 12th in the ACC in scoring offense and has really struggled to run the ball this year, averaging just 60.3 rushing yards per game. At the helm for BC is sophomore QB Phil Jurkovec, he is completing 65.1% of his passes and has totaled 1,181 yards and 8 touchdwns to just two interceptions. Boston College is averaging just 1.9 yards per carry as a team and has rushed for four touchdowns this year, three of them coming from Jurkovec.

Virginia Tech’s defense was exposed by the North Carolina run game and allowed 400 yards on the ground and has struggled in all three games this season, allowing an ACC worst 37 points per game and 488.7 total yards per game. Boston College has seen huge improvement last season and is 4th in the ACC in scoring defense allowing 20.8 points per game and allowing 370 yards per game.

Virginia Tech’s  5th ranked nationally rushing offense that is averaging 300 yards per game against the Boston College defense is the matchup that is going to decide this game. If Boston College is unable to stop the dynamic playmaking of Burmeister and Herbert, then Virginia Tech is going to win this game in a blowout. Virginia Tech has been able to run the ball effectively in all three games and there is no reason to see that stopping in this matchup. Virginia Tech wears down the Boston College defense, breaks off some big gains late in the game and is able to cover the double digit number at home. Final score prediction, Virginia Tech wins and covers ATS 45-28.
