App State at UL Lafayette 10/9/19 - NCAAF Picks & Predictions

The Appalachian State Mountaineers are set to visit Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana for a Sun Belt clash against the UL-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. The Appalachian State Mountaineers come into this matchup with a 4-0 record, and they will be looking to continue their success after winning a recent home game against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 56-37. QB Zac Thomas had an efficient game through the air for the Mountaineers as he connected on 19 of his 23 pass attempts for 246 yards, 2 TDs, and an interception. The ground attack was strong for the Mountaineers as Daetrich Harrington, Darrynton Evans, and Marcus Williams Jr. combined for 5 rushing TDs.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers struggled on the defensive side of the ball against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers as they allowed them to score 37 points and rack up a total of 393 yards of offense. Akeem Davis-Gaither led the way for the Appalachian State defense with 8 tackles and 1 sack. The secondary had a productive game for the Mountaineers as Shemar James-Charles contributed 2 pass deflections while Shaun Jolly returned an interception 24 yards for a TD.

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns come into this matchup with a 4-1 record, and they will be looking to continue their success after winning their recent road game against the Georgia Southern Eagles, 37-24. QB Levi Lewis wasn’t asked to do much through the air, but he was effective as he connected on 11 of his 18 pass attempts for 165 yards and a TD. The ground attack was very strong for the Ragin’ Cajuns as Trey Ragas and Elijah Mitchell combine for 212 rushing yards and 4 TDs.

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns were solid on the defensive side of the ball against the Georgia Southern Eagles as they held them to 24 points and a total of 252 yards of offense. Senior LB Jacques Boudreaux led the way for the Louisiana-Lafayette defense with 12 tackles and a TFL. Sophomore LB Kris Moncrief was able to get into the Georgia Southern backfield a handful of times as he contributed 5 tackles, 2 TFL, and 1 sack.

The road team has dominated the number between the Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns as of recent as they have covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 meetings. The Appalachian State Mountaineers have been one of the top teams in the college football in scoring as they currently rank 6th in points scored with 47 PPG. The Ragin’ Cajuns have also been one-dimensional this season on the offensive side of the ball as they are a strong running team but have struggled through the air. I expect the Mountaineers to key in on the ground game and force UL-Lafayette into some long passing situations. Appalachian State is the favorite to win the Sun Belt, and they already have one good win this season as they beat UNC. Expect Appalachian State to come up with a big road win. Final Score Prediction, Appalachian State Mountaineers win and cover ATS 38-31.
