Auburn has a few questions about figuring out how to get into the top 25 and maybe compete in the SEC West. Akron comes to Auburn to open the season with questions about the game itself. The Zips are in ESPN's Bottom 10 again after a 1-5 campaign last year. The only bright spot was the win ended a 21-game losing streak.
Auburn's Bo Nix struggled at quarterback last year and he will have some competition for the starting job heading into the season. LSU transfer TJ Finley has the talent to push, or even oust, Nix. Both will likely play in this game, and how they do may determine who ends up with the keys to the offense.
Auburn has a veteran offensive line and quality running backs. The receiving corps has a lot of new faces, but there is talent there to take things to a higher level. The Tigers need to improve defensively, and some newcomers could help out.
Akron struggled last year against MAC opponents to find itself. The Zips managed more than 14 points only twice in six games. Most of the offense is back, and hopefully somewhat stronger. Kato Nelson and Zach Gibson battle for the starting quarterback job, and JUCO transfer DJ Irons figures into the mix. The rushing game should be improved with Teon Dollard returning, and Michigan State transfer Anthony Williams being added to the rotation.
The Zips have a lot of players back, and hopefully that means some improvement. It just may not be enough in time for the Auburn game.
