The Mountain West is one conference that does not have any major teams that standout from being the leader in the conference. However, the Mountain West does have quite a few team that could really start to turn into some consistent midlevel bowl teams. This could really be a boon for the teams who are starting to showcase their talent on a national scale in the bowls.
A couple of teams that could start to push the border here is Nevada and potentially UNLV. However, Boise State is definitely one team that has all the skill levels that are needed to run away with the Mountain West again this year. Granted, the level of competition that Boise State played was not overly running away with the NCAA, but the competition was fierce and definitely gave the Broncos a challenge.
The other team that is a favorite in the Mountain West is Air Force. Yes, the Falcons are losing quite a bit of talent, every 4 years and the players are unable to really move onto the NFL it does not really hurt the Falcons with the talent coming in. Not to mention, the Falcons just by the nature of being a service school tends to be quite a bit more disciplined than what the other teams are.
One team that would have to improve dramatically to be seen as a threat would be New Mexico. The Lobos did not have a great run last year without a single win in conference. However, the Lobos are one team that really needs to showcase some of their talent that is on their roster which has some good players, but for the most part have been lacking in quite a bit of what the team has been able to do in the past.
The winner of the Mountain West is actually going to come down to Boise. The Boise State team has a lot of talent that is on the roster, but it also has a lot of strong players that are needing to be replaced this year. Look for Boise State to come into the season and play good, but will fall just short in landing some of the bigger bowl games. Mountain West Winner, Boise State Broncos.
