Although we are just less than five months away from the opening kickoff of the 2020 college football regular season, college football fans and bettors alike are anticipating the biggest matchups of the regular season. The following is a list of five of the top matchups of the upcoming season.

On November 7, the Alabama Crimson Tide will visit Death Valley for an SEC showdown with the LSU Tigers. Both Alabama and LSU will be playing with new quarterbacks, but both football programs are expected to battle for the SEC title and a shot at the college football playoff to determine the national champion.

An early-season match up on September 12 features the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Oregon Ducks. Ohio State holds a commanding 9-0 advantage in this series that has included a 2014 National Championship Game win and a 2009 Rose Bowl victory over the Ducks. Both Ohio State and Oregon won their respective Conference titles this past season and Ohio State will have Justin Fields, who is expected to battle for the Heisman Trophy, under center, while Oregon will likely have Tyler Shough, who backed up star signal caller Justin Herbert last season.

A September 12 matchup featuring Texas Longhorn at the LSU Tigers will be another huge matchup early in the 2020 college football regular season. LSU must replace the majority of its skill players on the offensive side including quarterback Joe Burrow and will face their first test of the season as defending national champions at home against the Longhorns. Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger will have the first tough matchup of his senior season with the Longhorns on the road at Death Valley.

On October 10th, the Auburn Tigers visit the Georgia Bulldogs in an SEC showdown. George has only one tough matchup prior to meeting Auburn against Alabama, while Auburn will likely enter the contest with a 5-0 record. Georgia has not lost at home to Auburn since 2005, a streak that includes six straight victories in Athens over the Tigers. Auburn must also face Alabama and LSU and a loss to Georgia could be devastating to their National Championship hopes.

The Big Ten schedule includes an important matchup on October 24 when the Ohio State Buckeyes visit the Penn State Nittany Lions. Ohio State will play Oregon, Michigan State and Iowa before visiting the Nittany Lions, while Penn State will have played Virginia Tech, Michigan and Iowa prior to the October 24 showdown. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions are expected to be at worst 5-1 when the two meet. Ohio State has won seven of the last eight head-to-head with Penn State but the margin of victory over the last four meetings has averaged just four points.

The Clemson Tigers are currently the favorite to win the 2021 college football national championship but with Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia expected to battle for the title, the matchup between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers on November 7 will be the Game of the Year in the college football regular season schedule. Alabama will steal a victory in Death Valley over LSU and eventually win the SEC title and return to the college football playoff.
