UT Rio Grande Valley at Texas 11/25/20 - NCAA Basketball Picks & Predictions

The UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros visit Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas on Wednesday to play the No. 19 ranked Texas Longhorns in the opening game of the college basketball regular season for both. UT Rio Grande Valley has been picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference. The Vaqueros are led by guard Javen Levi who has won WAC Defensive Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons. Last season Levi finished second in the nation in assists with an average of 7.96 per game. 

UT Rio Grande Valley finished it's 2019-20 seasoned with three wins over its last five games including two consecutive victories to end the season against Grand Canyon and California Baptist. The leading scorer returning from last season is  Levi who averaged 11.4 points per game, Quinton Johnson II will be the second leading scorer returning from last season with an average of 7.9 points per game. Levi led the Vaqueros in assists last season with an average of 7.9 per game. The leading rebounder from last season returning will be Sean Rhea who averaged 4.6 per game.

Last season Texas finished 19-12 overall and 9-9 in the Big 12. Key players returning for the Longhorns are senior guard Matt Coleman III, who averaged 12.7 points per game, and Andrew Jones a junior guard who averaged 11.5 points per game and Courtney Ramey who scored an average of 10.9 points per game. The majority of players are returning from last season for Texas and although the Longhorns struggled on offense, Texas is expected to battle this season for a spot in the top 5 in the Big 12 Conference.

Jase Febres is a proven shooter from 3-point territory while Donovan Williams played very well as a freshman last season. The top player joining Texas this season is freshman Greg Brown III. The forward is expected to make an immediate impact down low in the paint for the Longhorns. Brown is known for his athleticism and his ability to block shots. Brown will become one of the top rim protectors for the Longhorns.

Texas will face a large double digit spread to cover as overwhelming favorites to win at home to open the regular season against UT Rio Grande Valley. The Longhorns have the nucleus of their roster returning from last season led by senior guard Matt Coleman III, who led the Longhorns in both scoring and assists last season. Texas has won 15 of its last 21 straight up at home, while UT Rio Grande Valley has failed to cover 11 of its last 15 on the road. Final Score Prediction, Texas Longhorns win and cover ATS 87-52.
