Nice start to year as Tennessee Volunteers take on #15 VCU Commonwealth in the Quicken Loans Veterans Classic at Annapolis, Maryland.

The Tennessee Volunteers ended their 2013-14 season in relative mediocrity. Despite grabbing on to 24 wins they still fell well short of the aspirations that they carried with themselves while entering the season. To kick off the 2014-2015 year they will be participating int he Quicken Loans Veterans Classic against the #15 ranked VCU Commonwealth Rams. The Rams won 26 games last season including a 12-4 record against A10 competition. They'll be starting the year looking to dominate in order to establish how real their ranking really is.
The Commonwealth Rams will be bringing back the majority of their roster from last season. In 2013 they were putting up 75 PPG while only giving up 65 PPG. A big part of their defense was the willingness to gamble in the passing lanes and get steals. On offense senior swingman Treveon Graham will be the guy to watch. The 6'6 forward averaged 16PPG and 7RPG last year.

Tennessee is a middling team offensively but they still possessed a +10 point differential by the end of the year. Their offense is a slow paced grind it out style but that doesn't seem to hurt them in close games. They'll have to find a new leading scorer as Jordan McRae has graduated and taken his 18.6PPG with him.

Free NCAAB Pick:

VCU Commonwealth -1.5

VCU is a deserving favorite in season opener as the Commonwealth are loaded and deep. Huge advantage in veterans as VCU jumps out to early lead and allow their full court pressure defense to dominate and carry them to late win. Tennessee is young and talented but facing the pressure defense is just too much to ask in opener. Final Score Prediction, VCU wins and covers ATS 76-67.
