St. Mary's at Wisconsin 11/5/19 - College Basketball Picks & Predictions

The Saint Mary’s Gaels are set to visit Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the season opener as they will face the Wisconsin Badgers. The Saint Mary’s Gaels will be looking to continue their success from the 2018-2019 season as they went 22-12 an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Saint Mary’s Gaels will return their leading scorer and rebounder from a season ago as senior guard Jordan Ford (21.1 PPG) and junior forward Malik Fitts (15.2 PPG, 7.6 RPG) return to the starting lineup. The Gaels brought in grad transfer Aaron Menzies who averaged 11.3 PPG and 8.9 RPG with Seattle last season.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels were average at scoring the basketball during the 2018-2019 season as they scored an average of 72.4 PPG which ranked 173rd in the country. The Saint Mary’s Gaels were one of the best teams in college basketball at keeping their opponents off the scoreboard last season as they held them to an average of 64.3 PPG which ranked 26th in the country.

The Wisconsin Badgers will be looking to continue their success from the 2018-2019 season as they went 23-11 with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Wisconsin Badgers will have to replace one of the top players in the country as Ethan Happ graduated after averaging 17.3 PPG, 10.1 RPG, and 4.5 APG last season. Wisconsin is expecting growth out of their backcourt as junior guards D’Mitrik Trice and Brad Davidson combined for 22.1 PPG last year.

The Wisconsin Badgers struggled at scoring the basketball during the 2018-2019 season as they scored an average of 68.6 PPG which ranked 277th in the country. The Wisconsin Badgers were one of the best teams in college basketball at keeping their opponents off the scoreboard last season as they held them to an average of 61.7 PPG which ranked 9th in the country.

Both of these teams were granted early exits in the NCAA Tournament last season, but the Badgers have to replace one of their top players in school history as Ethan Happ graduated. The Gaels will return the majority of their roster from last season, and they even got stronger from last season with the addition of Aaron Menzies in the grad transfer market. Wisconsin has traditionally gone through the paint on the offensive side of the court, but they lack an inside presence which will force them to take outside shots against one of the best defensive-minded coaches in basketball. Wisconsin will be competitive in the Big Ten as usual, but they will go through some growing pains against a very good Saint Mary’s team. Final Score Prediction, Saint Mary’s Gaels win and cover ATS 65-56.
