Portland Pilots at San Diego Toreros 2/25/21 - College Basketball Picks & Predictions

The Portland Pilots will be looking to put an end to their 12-game losing streak when they travel on the road to Jenny Craig Pavillion to take on the San Diego Toreros. Portland lost back-to-back games to Pacific, losing by 27 in the first on the road, and was dominated in the rematch 80-58 dropping to 6-14 (0-11 conference).

Portland is simply put, a terrible team on both ends of the floor. The Pilots are 48th in adjusted tempo but are scoring just 68.7 points per game ranking 252nd in the country in scoring offense. They’ve been inefficient shooting a disappointing 40.6% from the field and 32.9% from beyond the arc, ranking 317 and 217th nationally.

Senior guard Ahmed Ali has continued to be a solid piece for Portland and one of the few players showing the ability to score the ball averaging a team-high 18 points on 46.8% shooting, he’s also dishing out a team-high 3 assists per game. Junior forward Eddie Davis has held down the front-court pulling down a team-high 4.5 rebounds and adding 11.5 points per game.

Sam Diego hasn’t been any better on the offensive end they’re scoring 66 points per game ranking 293rd in the country in scoring offense. They’ve shot 41.3% from the field, 304th in field-goal percentage, and 32.3% from beyond the arc, 250th nationally in three-point percentage. San Diego is 82nd in adjusted tempo and 250th in KenPom adjusted offense.

Junior guard Joey Calcaterra has led the way for the Toreros scoring 13.5 points per game, shooting 40.5% from beyond the arc. Senior Yauhen Massalski, the 6-10 center from Belarus, is leading the team in rebounding with 8.4 per game and adds 7.3 points per game but has missed time with a nagging injury but is expected to be healthy in this game.

Unfortunately for these two teams, the struggles haven’t been limited to the offensive end. San Diego is allowing 76.8 points per game ranking 308th in scoring defense; opponents are shooting 46/8% from the field and 37.4% from three, 311th and 325th nationally. The Toreros are 149th in KenPom defensive efficiency.

Portland is at the bottom five of scoring defenses nationally, allowing 82.7 points per game ranking 342nd in the country in scoring defense. Opponents have shot a blistering 49.9% from the field, 343rd in defensive field-goal percentage, and 37.1% from beyond the arc, 321st in three-point defense. Portland is 334th in KenPom adjusted defense.

Both of these two are at the bottom of the WCC but when you look at the advanced metrics, San Diego holds a sizable advantage. I see them winning this game on their home-floor but with how much they’ve struggled, especially since coming back from a COVID pause in late-January, I like Portland to keep it within the double-digit spread. Final score prediction, San Diego wins but doesn’t cover ATS 74-69.
