On Tuesday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish visit Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia for a New Year’s Day showdown with the No. 10 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. The Fighting Irish avoided an upset with a 63-56 win over winless Coppin State on Saturday. The Irish moved to 10-3 on the season behind TJ Gibbs’ 15 points and two others players scoring in double figures.
Virginia Tech improved to 11-1 on the season with an 85-40 rout of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday. Ahmed Hill led the Hokies with 20 points. Virginia Tech shot close to 66% for the game and has now won six straight since its only loss to Penn State 63-62.
TJ Gibbs is the team leader in scoring with an average of 14.2 points per game. John Mooney is the second leading scorer and leading rebounder with averages of 12.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Rex Pfueger leads Notre Dame in assists with an average of 4.3 per game. Notre Dame is shooting an average of 42.6% from the field and 34.3% from 3-point territory.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker leads Virginia Tech in scoring with an average of 18.5 points per game. Justin Robinson is the leader in assists with an average of 5.9 assists per game, while the leading rebounder is Ty Outlaw with an average of 5.6 per game. The Hokies are shooting 51.2% from the field and 44.5% from 3-point territory.
