The No. 18 ranked Marquette Golden Eagles visit Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York to play a New Year’s game against the St. John’s Red Storm. The Golden Eagles improved to 11-2 on the season following their 84-41 rout of Southern on Friday. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles in the win with 26 points. Howard scored 23 of his 26 during the first half.
St. John’s lost its first game of the season on Saturday falling to the Seton Hall Pirates 76-74 as the Pirates hit a three-point shot as the buzzer sounded to beat the Red Storm. St. John’s is now 12-1 on the season. St. John’s squandered a 14-point lead in the second half to let Seton Hall back in the game going over seven minutes without a field goal.
Markus Howard leads Marquette in scoring and assists with averages of 25.1 points and 4.2 assists per game. Sam Hauser is the second leading scorer and leading rebounder with averages of 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The Golden Eagles are shooting 46.0% from the field and 38.8% from 3-point territory.
Shamorie Ponds leads St. John’s in scoring and assists with averages of 18.7 points and 6.1 assists per game. Three other players for the Red Storm are averaging double figures in scoring.
