The Maine Black Bears pack up and head west on Thursday in a visit to Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah to play the Utah Utes in a college basketball game. The Black Bears lost their opening game of the season to Denver 62-50 on Tuesday night. In the loss, Andrew Fleming led the Black Bears with 10 points while Vincent Eze was the team leader in rebounds with 10.
Utah has seen success the past few seasons, but this should be a rebuilding year for the Utes. Last season, the Utes were 23-12 overall and 11-7 in Pac-12 play and reached the NIT. Four starters were lost from last season and if the Utes want to compete in a tough Pac-12 new players need to step up. The four starters lost represented 44 points per game for Utah.
After one game, Andrew Fleming leads Maine in scoring with 10 points and is the only Black Bears player in double figures. The leading rebounder for Main is Vincent Eze with 10, while Fleming and Eze each had two assists to lead the team. As a team, Maine is shooting 31.0% from the field and 28.5% from 3-point territory.
Guard Sedrick Barefield, who averaged 12.0 points per game last season, is the only returning starter for Utah. Three other players from last year returning to the team averaged between 4.0 points and 7.8 points per game. Eleven new players including 8 freshmen and 3 transfers have joined the Utes. Timmy Allen a freshman is considered the best new face on the team. The 6-foot-6 forward could become one of the team’s major scoring threats.

Utah may be in a rebuild mode this season, but remains far superior in talent compared to Maine. The Black Bears lost to Denver, and will be overwhelmed with the size and speed of Utah in this matchup. Look for the Utes to display talented freshmen Timmy Allen to win and cover their opener. Final Score Prediction, Utah Utes win and cover ATS 89-64.
