No 4 Kansas and No. 5 Kentucky square off Tuesday in the Champions Classic in a battle of potential national contenders. Kentucky has played two games, and just barely survived a game against Vermont over the weekend, winning by four. Kentucky won its opener by 10 as new players are still coming together as a team. Kansas has just played one game, and that was a 36-point rout of Tennessee State. These teams met last year with Kansas getting a six-point win. Both teams were in the Elite 8 last year, and that or more expected of both this year.
Of the eight players Kentucky used in its first two games, six were freshmen, and two were sophomores. Hamidou Diallo is averaging 17 points through two games. Kevin Knox and PG Washington both averaged 11.
Kansas has won 13 Big-12 titles, and last year had the player of the year Frank Mason, who is gone. Kansas has two returning starters but has enough new blood to make another title run. Kansas has relied more on the 3-pointer so far in exhibition games and in their one regular season game.
It is a small sample size, but in one regular season game, Lagerald Vick scored 23 points, and Sviatoslav Mykhailuk scored 15. Devonte Graham had 10 points and 12 assists. Marcus Garrett had 10 point and 10 rebounds. Vick is in his third year with the Jayhawks. Mykhailuk and Graham are entering his senior season. Garrett is the only freshman in the group.
