|Game||Churchill Downs vs Kentucky Derby 2019|
|Date & Time||Saturday May 4, 2019, 6:50 PM (EDT)|
On Saturday May 4, the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place from famed Churchill Downs. The greatest thoroughbred horse race in the United States will have its richest-ever purse of $3 million. The 1 ¼ mile first leg of the Triple Crown with a full field of 20 has a 6:50 PM EST post time.
The favorite to win the derby is Omaha Beach at 4 to 1 following Tuesday’s post draw. Omaha Beach has a quality draw at post No. 12, while Game Winner at 5 to 1 drew the No. 16 post and Roadster at 6 to 1 drew the No. 17 post. Omaha Beach was given the favorite status thanks to his victories at the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby. Mike Smith in the irons will help Omaha Beach make an early move then sustain it throughout.
Game Winner, one of three Bob Baffert horses in the race, will have Joel Rosario aboard. Game Winner was undefeated as a two-year old and won the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile at Churchill. Roadster, another Baffert horse, has been called the next American Pharoah by Baffert. Roadster has won each of the two races he has entered as a 3-year old including the Santa Anita Derby where he beat out Game Winner. Improbable, the third of Baffert’s horses is 10 to 1 and will run from the No. 5 post. Improbable will have Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard and has finished runner up on two occasions this spring.
The remaining horses in the field include War Will at 20 to 1, Tax at 20 to 1, By My Standards at 20 to 1, Gray Magician at 50 to 1, Vekoma at 10 to 1, Tacitus at 10 to 1, Plus Que Parfait at 30 to 1, Cutting Humor at 30 to 1, Haikal at 30 to 1, Code of Honor at 15 to 1, Win Win Win at 15 to 1, Master Fencer at 50 to 1, Long Ranger Toddy at 30 to 1, Spinoff at 30 to 1 and Country House at 30 to 1. Bodexpress is also eligible and has until the 9 a.m. EST on Friday scratch deadline to draw into Saturday’s field.
Betting against the Kentucky Derby favorite has been bad for me with the favorite winning 6 straight - this is the year that the favorite Omaha Beach comes up short. Really think the longshort #14 Win Win Win will be coming late after what looks like a bunch of speed in this years derby.
