On November 3-4 Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California will host the 40th annual Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The Breeders’ Cup Sprint is six furlongs in length with a purse of $2 million. The fastest thoroughbreds in the world will compete in this sprint and will reach speeds of close to 40 mph. The race is open to horses 3 years and older both male and female. Nine horses will leave the gate on Saturday and the current Morning Line favorite is Elite Power at 9 to 5.
Elite Power will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr and is trained by William I. Matt. Elite Power capped a five-race winning streak when winning by more than a length last year at the same event for which he earned the male sprinter champion Eclipse Award. After returning to action, following last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint win, Elite Power was unbeaten in three straight races before finishing second in his most recent race.
Speed Boat Beach has the second best morning line odds for this race at 3 to 1. The thoroughbred will be ridden by Mike Smith and is trained by Bob Baffert. Speed Boat Beach during 2023 made just one start and finished second but in five career starts has three victories and one place with earnings of $218,000.
In a race of just six furlongs it is difficult to bet against last year’s champion who has had a very successful 2023 campaign with three wins in four starts, while winning eight of the last nine sprints. That is why I’ll take the favorite in this race as Elite Power is in an elite class of his own and until he loses two or more races consecutively, must be respected by the others and considered the one to beat.
