On Saturday, April 14, the Arkansas Derby a G1 Kentucky Derby prep race will run at Oaklawn Park. On Wednesday, race organizers held the derby draw and Magnum Moon drew post No. 6 and was given the morning-line favorite status of 8 to 5 in a field of nine. The Todd Pletcher trained colt looks to give the highly respected trainer his fifth win at the derby.

Just to the inside of Magnum Moon is Solomini the runner up at the recent Rebel Stakes, who breaks from post No. 5, with the second shortest odds at 2 to 1. The Bob Baffert trained colt looks to give Baffert his third derby win, with his last coming in 2015 with American Pharoah, who went on to win the Triple Crown.

Quip the recent winner at the Tampa Bay Derby will leave from post No. 8 and has been handed the third shortest odds at 9 to 2. The colt is trained by Rodolphe Brisset.
The remaining horses in the field for the race of 1 1/8 mile beginning at the rail are Beautiful Shot at 30 to 1, Machismo at 20 to 1, Tenfold at 10 to 1, Dream Baby Dream at 15 to 1, Plainsman at 30 to 1, and Combatant at 6 to 1.

A dark horse in this derby will be Combatant. The colt has the fourth-shortest odds at 5 to 1 and is Steve Asmussen trained. Combatant was second or third in each of his past four starts, which were all major stakes races.

In Combatant’s most recent four starts, the colt was second in December at the Springboard Mile Stakes, second in January at the Smarty Jones Stakes, second in February at the Southwest Stakes and third in March at the Rebel Stakes.

Nevertheless, this race is Magnum Moon’s to lose as the colt has shown in previous events that he can get around the track well and has incredible staying power down the stretch as evidenced by his finish at the Rebel Stakes last month.

Son of 2007 Arkansas Derby winner Curlin it's a big step forward for Tenfold in first stakes competition. Love the connections including triple crown winning jockey Espinoza and under rated trainer Steve Asmussen. Clearly the favorite Magnum Moon will be tough but trainer Todd Pletcher and this group already have enough points to get into Kentucky Derby so not sure if will be 100% with just a few weeks until Kentucky Derby.
