2023 Kentucky Derby Field - Skinner

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 6. The most talented 3-year-old thoroughbreds in the country will leave the gate at 6:57 pm. The field is expected to be very strong and will be a battle throughout the 1 ¼-mile event. More than 150,000 spectators will be on hand, while millions more are expected to watch across the globe.

Skinner will leave from Gate 9 on Saturday and is trained by John Shirreffs. The thoroughbred is currently 20-1. Skinner arrives at the 2023 Kentucky Derby off a finish of third at the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby this past April 8. Shirreffs will be attempting to win his second Derby in six tries, while Juan Hernandez will be on board Skinner and racing for the first time in the Derby.

Skinner raced against very tough competition while a 2-year-old. The thoroughbred was fifth at Del Mar in his maiden race and also took part in Grade 1 events twice, finishing third at the Del Mar Futurity and sixth in the American Pharoah. Skinner broke his Maiden on February 12 while racing at Santa Anita Park. Previously Victor Espinoza rode Skinner, but the three-time winner of the Derby has been replaced by Hernandez.
