2023 Kentucky Derby Field - Mage

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 6. The most talented 3-year-old thoroughbreds in the country will leave the gate at 6:57 pm. The field is expected to be very strong and will be a battle throughout the 1 ¼-mile event. More than 150,000 spectators will be on hand, while millions more are expected to watch across the globe.

Mage will leave from Gate 8 at Saturday's Kentucky Derby and is trained by Gustavo Delgado. Mage currently has odds of 15-1. The thoroughbred arrives at the Kentucky Derby off a second place finish in the Florida Derby, which is a Grade 1 event, held at Gulfstream Park on April 1. Trainer Delgado has not won a Derby in two attempts, while jockey Javier Castellano will be riding in his 16th Derby but has yet to win one.

Mage is one of two horses in the Kentucky Derby that did not race as a two-year-old. He broke his Maiden while debuting at Gulfstream Park on January 28th and followed that with a fourth place finish at the Fountain of Youth, a Grade 2 event, on March 4. Only two horses, Apollo in 1882 and Justify in 2018 have won the Kentucky Derby when not racing as 2-year-olds. Luiz Saez was on board Mage at the Florida Derby but will be riding Tapit Trice on Saturday.
