2023 Kentucky Derby Field - Kingsbarns

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 6. The most talented 3-year-old thoroughbreds in the country will leave the gate at 6:57 pm. The field is expected to be very strong and will be a battle throughout the 1 ¼-mile event. More than 150,000 spectators will be on hand, while millions more are expected to watch across the globe.

Kingsbarns is trained by Todd Pletcher and is currently 12-1. Kingsbarns will leave from Gate 6. The thoroughbred is a pacesetter after winning the Louisiana Derby from gate to wire and enters Saturday's Kentucky Derby with three wins in three career starts. Kingsbarns also was victorious at Gulfstream Park in the middle of January and Tampa Bay Downs just four weeks afterward.

Kingsbarns will have Jose Ortiz on board, who will be looking for his first Kentucky Derby victory, but has plenty of experience as this will be his eighth time in the saddle for the Derby. Kingsbarns did not race as a 2-year-old and is one of only two horses in Saturday’s field that did not race as a two-year-old. Flavien Prat was on Kingsbarn when winning the Louisiana Derby but will ride Angel of Empire on Saturday.
