2022 Kentucky Derby - Superfecta Picks

Last Updated: 05/02/2022 at 6:48 PM ET

The 148th Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the famed “Triple Crown,” will “run for the roses” at 6:57 pm Saturday May 7 at Churchill Downs. Hundreds of millions of dollars will be wagered on the Kentucky Derby this Saturday. Bettors can choose from several types of wagers and while not as popular as other bets, the Superfecta can turn a small wager into hundreds of thousands of dollars in winnings. In the Superfecta one must choose the top four finishers in the race and in the order of finish.

First - White Abarrio (+1200) is one of the most feared thoroughbreds in the Kentucky Derby after winning twice as a two-year old with one third place finish and twice as a three-year old, earlier in 2022. The Saffie Joseph Jr. trained colt will have Tyler Gaffalione onboard. White Abarrio is the fifth Derby mount for Gaffalione. White Abarrio is not a pace-setter but a stalker and must remain within striking distance through the first mile and then take off around the corner and down the stretch.

Second - Epicenter is the favorite to win Saturday's Kentucky Derby at +500. The Steve Asmussen trained colt has won four of his six starts with one second place finish. In four prep races for the Derby, Epicenter was victorious in three and lost the fourth by a head. Epicenter was the pace setter in his next to last prep race and went on to win the Risen Star Stakes. His ability to stalk as well was seen when sitting off Zozos the early pacesetter and using an early stretch surge to win by over two lengths at the Louisiana Derby. Joel Rosario will be aboard Epicenter.

Third - Taiba (+700) is a hard thoroughbred to handicap. The 3-year old has raced just twice in his career and has won both. However, odds makers and racing experts have not seen enough of the Tim Yakteen trained horse to pinpoint his strengths and weaknesses, if any. The thoroughbred won each of his two starts with the first under the tutelage of Bob Baffert, romping to a sprint win at six furlongs at Santa Anita Park. The Gun Runner colt then transferred to the Tim Yakteen barn when Baffert was banned for two-years at the Derby. In April 4th’s Santa Anita Derby, Taiba sat off the pacesetters and powered down the stretch to be by over two lengths. Mike Smith will be in the saddle on Saturday aboard Taiba.

Fourth - Zandon (+700) has had four career starts, with two victories, one second and one third place finish. Zandon’s handlers have been patient with this colt and it's paid off following four starts that were spaced out with his best race the last of the four resulting in a victory at Keeneland in the Blue Grass Stakes. The Chad Brown trained colt will have Flavien Prat on board Saturday, who rode the colt for just the first time when winning the Blue Grass Stakes. Prat, who is from France, has become one of the most preeminent riders across North America. In 2019, Prat won the Kentucky Derby aboard Country House.
