2022 Kentucky Derby Field - Zandon

Zandon will leave from the no. 10 gate and is the current odds on favorite to win Saturday's 148th Kentucky Derby with odds of 3-1. The 3 year old will be ridden by Flavien Prat and is Chad Brown trained. In four career starts Zandon has two wins, one second and a third. Zandon’s career earnings are $713,000. The stalker/closer is expected to put the fear in many jockeys if near the front at the far turn.
Zandon took part in four Derby races that were well-spaced out and enjoyed his best race to date in his most recent, winning the Blue Grass Stakes by over two lengths at Keeneland. Zandon finished a disappointing third in the Risen Star Stakes behind Epicenter and Smile Happy. Zandon has raced against the best of Saturday’s field and four wins out of six starts is impressive.
Zandon must have a fairly clean trip and receive a bit of racing luck if he expects to have the opportunity to set up his strong finishing kick. Zandon has had excellent workouts over the last few months in both Florida and Kentucky and is expected to finish amongst the first three that cross the line. A favorable draw at the post position will help his stalking style.
Trainer Brown has had six Derby horses prior to 2022 and was second with Good Magic in 2018. Jockey Prat was on Zandon for just the first time in the thoroughbred’s Blue Grass Stakes win and was the winning jockey on Country House in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Zandon is the current favorite at 3-1 and will be tough to beat if starting the homestretch near the front and off the rail.
