2022 Kentucky Derby Field - Tiz The Bomb

Last Updated: 05/04/2022 at 6:42 PM ET

Tiz The Bomb will leave from the no. 9 gate on Saturday at the Kentucky Derby. Brian Hernandez Jr. will ride the three-year old Ken McPeek trained colt. In eight career starts, Tiz The Bomb has five wins and one second, with career earnings of $1,044,401. Tiz The Bomb is considered a closer and will be tough to hold off if near the front at the turn.

Tiz The Bomb has won four stakes races and finished second in a fifth. However, the concern, and it’s quite big, is that each of those five stakes races were on turf or synthetic services. Against a much tougher field earlier this year, at the Holy Bull Stakes, which was on Gulfstream Park dirt track, Tiz The Bomb finished a disappointing seventh and was never in contention.

However, Tiz The Bomb broke his maiden tag with a victory at Tilles Park on dirt. The colt has two wins leading up to the Derby on synthetic surfaces which appeared impressive. Trainer McPeek has had six starters in the Derby and finished second in 1995 with Tejano Run. Hernandez Jr. has been the mount in two previous Derbys.

Tiz The Bomb has had a strong career thus far with five wins in eight career starts but has just one of those five wins on dirt and is coming off two races on synthetic surfaces. The closer must remain near the lead group to have any chance of chasing down the leaders and holding off the other closers in the field on the homestretch.
