2022 Kentucky Derby Field - Charge It

Last Updated: 05/04/2022 at 6:43 PM ET

Charge It will leave from the No. 8 gate on Saturday at Churchill Downs. The  three-year-old has been lightly raced with only three starts that have included one win and two seconds. Luis Saez will ride the Todd Pletcher trained thoroughbred on Saturday. Charge It has $230,400 in career earnings. Charge It debuted as a 3 year old in early 2022 in South Florida at Gulfstream Park with a second place finish.

In his second start, Charge It dominated in a race of one mile at Gulfstream, winning by over eight lengths. The colt was then moved up in class to compete at the Florida Derby. In that event, the three-year-old was able to overcome a difficult start and finish second behind just White Abarrio.

Charge It uses long-strides, is physically impressive and comes from a strong pedigree of stamina, as the son of Tapit. Trainer Pletcher has two wins at the Kentucky Derby in 2010 and 2017, along with a pair of seconds and four third place finishes. Luis Saez has raced eight times in the Derby and won in 2019 on Maximum Security, but was later disqualified for interference.

Last year, jockey Saez was aboard Essential Quality to place fourth in the Derby, which was eventually elevated to third after Medina was disqualified. Charge It, currently with odds of 20-1 has a strong pedigree when it comes to stamina and if positioned right at the far turn could give the others a run for their money.
