The PGA Tour returns this week to the mainland, following it's Hawaii swing. On Thursday, The American Express tees off at PGA West in La Quinta, California. Traditionally this tournament has been played on three courses and the cut was usually on Saturday after 54 holes, but this season the tournament will be played on two courses with the cut on Friday and the pro-am event will not be held.
This will be a full-field event and will have a stronger field this year than in years past. Five out of the top 20 in the world rankings will tee off this week. The Nicklaus Tournament Course is a 7,100-yard par 72 that is generous fairways but has difficult greens to approach. The Stadium Course is also a 7,100 yard par 72. The more challenging course of the two is the Stadium Course, as water comes into play on nine holes.
Notable players taking part this week include Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka amongst others. Other players that have played the tournament in the past and are returning this week include Zach Johnson, Cameron Champ, Charley Hoffman and Sepp Straka, who finished fourth in this tournament last year and finished in the top 25 last week in Hawaii.

Matthew Wolff (+2000) finished well back in his debut at this tournament last season in 61st but in any event where the field of participants is “average,” and the scoring is going to be very low, Wolff is often in the mix. Wolff finished -20 at the recent 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic and was second and two weeks later at -14 finished T-12 in the 3M Open. Final Pick, Matthew Wolff (+2000)
