The PGA tour follows the second major of the year the PGA Championship with the Charles Schwab Challenge this week. A surprisingly strong field will play at the event in Fort Worth, Texas at the Colonial Country Club. Last season the tournament was the first event played following the re-start of the season in mid June after the pandemic.
Daniel Berger returns to defend his title, while Jordan Spieth (+1000), who has already won this year in the state of Texas, is the favorite entering the tournament. Also in this week's field is Phil Mickelson, who became the oldest golfer ever to win a major after winning the PGA Championship last weekend. Mickelson has won twice at Colonial, but his most recent victory was back in 2008.
The Colonial Country Club is a 7,200-yard Par 70. The early stretch of holes 3 through 5 is called the “Horrible Horseshoe.” The three holes swing around to form a U-shape and are difficult to say the least. Accuracy off the tee as well as from the fairway is key at Colonial. Fairways are lined with trees and bunkers and players must strategically place their balls on the fairway to attack the smaller than average greens.
