The first quarterfinal match-up of the 2020 World Championship isn’t all that exciting. There’s really no other way to put it. In fact, maybe we’ve even phrased things a bit too mildly. On paper, this is a clash between the first and second best teams from Korea. In actuality, however, we’re talking about two teams that are worlds apart in terms of overall strength, potential, and sheer talent.

DAMWON Gaming is one of the most dominant teams we’ve ever seen, and they’re one of the biggest frontrunners to win the whole tournament — that alone tells you all you need to know going forward. As far as DAMWON is concerned, the only adjective that’s consistently applicable is “dominant.” And they’re dominant in a myriad of ways, with new ones continuing to pop up as the season goes along. They’re not infallible, but they’re damn near close, and watching them play has been nothing short of mind-blowing.

The thing why this match-up, in particular, fails to excite is not just because DAMWON is so darn good, but also because we’ve seen it mere months ago in the 2020 LCK Summer Split finals. Back then, DAMWON steamrolled through DRX in insanely dominant, one-sided fashion. Heck, it didn’t even look like a fight. If you had removed their name tags, you’d think it was a clash between a pro team and a bunch of solo queue scrubs — it was that uneven.

And sure, DRX might have improved since then, but even at their absolute best they fail to hold a candle to a giant of DAMWON’s caliber. There’s just no competition here, and even though DRX will try their hardest to prove us wrong, they’re destined to fail for a wide variety of reasons. They’re simply outmatched across the board and there’s very little they can do to change it.

Still, entertainment and a bit of top-tier League should not be absent. In any case, watching DAMWON flex over their opposition should definitely be a big enough reason to tune in!
